Medical Billing Specialist (levels I, II, and III)

Job Summary:
The Medical Billing Specialist will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of medical claims. This role involves billing insurance companies, patients, and other payers, and managing follow-ups on unpaid or denied claims. The ideal candidate will have experience in medical coding, an understanding of insurance guidelines, and a strong ability to navigate complex billing systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and submit accurate medical claims to insurance companies and patients
Review and follow up on unpaid or denied claims, ensuring resolution
Verify patient insurance coverage and obtain necessary authorizations
Maintain detailed records of all billing and claims activities
Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, such as HIPAA and Medicaid guidelines
Collaborate with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients to resolve billing discrepancies
Post payments to patient accounts and reconcile accounts receivable
Stay up-to-date on changes to insurance policies and healthcare regulations
Assist with patient billing inquiries and provide exceptional customer service
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree in healthcare administration or related field preferred)
Minimum of 1-2 years of medical billing experience, including familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding
Strong knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance billing practices
Proficiency in using medical billing software (e.g., Kareo, Epic, or others)
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and compliance
Preferred Qualifications:
Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or similar certification
Experience with Michigan Medicaid insurance and regulations (optional: adapt based on your region)
Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems
